Anointed Then Appointed

"So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, 'Surely the Lord's anointed is before Him!' But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.' So Jesse called Adinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this." 1 Samuel 16:6-8 [NKJV]
David's brothers must have been shocked at God's choice. "Surely the aging prophet made a mistake?" They were provoked by jealousy and anger and felt that they were more qualified and deserved to succeed Saul as King. While others saw a shepherd, God saw a king (1 Samuel 17:26-29). Wait on God, if He's chosen you for a particular office, He'll anoint you for it. You won't have to manipulate the system.
After being anointed by God, David continued to look after the sheep and serve God. It was approximately a seven year process. Preperation and discipline are the pillars of success. Go to your secret place, get alone with God; He will direct you and reveal His will for you. Seperation is God's time of preparation. Davide was being groomed for kingship.
Faithfulness is a process, it matures with perserverance and pleases God.
